Ok so I had this idea in a fit of rage of basically taking a bunch of my blog entries and mashing it up with a bunch of stuff a sweetie would contribute and making this weird kind of cut-up zine about what it’s like to be a trans lady and what I’m mad about but it’s hard to talk about.

Signal boost!

This is an extracted + expanded response to a conversation about this call for submissions that happened on Facebook between Red Durkin, Twid Widmer, Andreia Blue, Annie Danger, Imogen Binnie, *MOI*, and some other peeps I hold in fairly high esteem. It started as me responding to questions about what anonymity means for this project, and what the OP is getting at with her stated requirements/desires around the project. I am not opposed in this at all, but it gave me a lot to think about.

Names included above because the conversation is “PUBLIC” on Red’s wall and I figured it was important.

A lot of potentially great writing and discussion by and between trans women gets completely sideswiped by unfortuneate soapboxing that lots of trans woman feel pressure to do which is:

2000 words where I prove I am a valid human being by addressing every possible intersection of marginalization I have EVER heard of, and will get to “Me” later once the community has somewhat agreed to listen to me.

Spoiler alert though, I will never really get to the “me” part. I’ll just be intellectualizing everything to death ad nauseum, and continuing to not stand up and claim a space for trans women to talk about being a trans woman, and intersections WITHIN being a trans woman specifically.

Intellectualizing is a hugely prevalent defense mechanism for never addressing your feelings of “it sucks to be me” and BEYOND. This prohibits growth of anyone, personal - political - intellectual - emotional - interpersonal - etc, etc, et fucking cetera. I think any person reading this would agree discussion, exploration, and expression around your your hurt feelings of marginalization help a person work through their own bullshit and probz.

And when the mores dictate “Everyone has it worse than you, white trans woman. Or trans woman who isn’t white but you must have that pesky CLASS PRIVILEGE because holy moly yr a BLOGGER!” then BOY is it easy (and often filled with the profit of external reward!) to keep going down that road.

(the belief that internet access = privilege of some specific sort btw, is basically akin to ppl getting mad when food benefit recipients have COLOR TEEVEES or COFFEE MAKERS - just sayin’)

This is a HUGE PROBLEM that I think about constantly — and it’s the main reason I almost always stop reading what a trans woman has written on the internet. I do not blame trans women for this, I blame the community that disregards what trans women say and pressure them into committing this act of attrition or be damned as SELFISH, or ENTITLED and unworthy of platforms for their own issues, even when they want a platform for and by themselves. Might I add, this platform essentially has yet to exist.

Uninterrupted, candid verité… another thing trans women lack, even on the internet. Time and time again, when trans women talk about their own issues there are interjections by someone who is not a trans woman, or by another trans woman with huge sharp elbows so bent on winning this reindeer game that the writer’s personal queries and ponderances are derailed with something usually along the lines of “… especially trans women of color. Ableism also, etc.”

This most often takes one of two forms:

One is let’s say a white woman who mentions the struggles of others like her that aren’t white. She is then invoking and appropriating, and can’t speak to that.

Two, she just just talks about stuff - often including concerns and tactics in regard to issues surrounding various intersectionz without EXPLICITLY declaring them using the officially sanctioned vocabulary used by those wonderful and TOTALLY RELEVANT queer theory students and their impersonators. In this case, an OFTEN white gender non-conforming lesbianish masculine spectrum trans* person will pull the “[repeat what she just said in a reductive way] … especially trans women of color,” gag.

There are times where I seriously regret not having put a RIMSHOT on my phone ready to trigger after it happens. Followed by an applause track. Because seriously it’s like that’s what the person seems to expect.

Please note, understand, and BELIEVE, I have seen this happen *IRL* in the presence of a bona fide, honest-to-god, actual living and breathing trans woman of color. God forbid she just talk about stuff relating to her experience as a trans person and not fellate the entire social justice uinverse concerns of someone that was supposed to be listening that day.

Put bluntly you guys, it’s ugly.

I have been nervous to talk about these things I have mentioned because seriously all otherr facets of the “queer community” have built such a strong infrastructure that benefits them and excludes trans women. I obviously have a lot of vitriol around all of this, but I think I am speaking the truth and not just ranting in a “poor me” way.

Even as I prepare to post this, I am already listing in my mind all of the personal attacks I will get in an effort to dismiss what I am saying as a valid response to my own actual for-real undeniably lived experience. Just to let y’all itchy-fingered scene hogs know: I won’t be engaging with you.

I’d love to talk though! Especially with - you guessed it:

P.S. No hate toward the trans women I am kinda openly mocking in the fake blog post. I whisper a sincere “Bless her heart” every time I hit the back button — a lot of you are actually great writers, and I know it helps a lot of ppl younger than you once they happen upon it. This post is actually a huge HIGH-5 to you.

Firstly, I do not know this person putting this call out. That was actually the main subject of me and my friends’ convo. I am not speaking to what she actually meant from discouraging social justice content. This was my guess, which later evolved into my own feelings about it.

The end of all this for me is, is that this project is not particularly important to me personally. I have an absolutely neutral stance on it. Sounds cool! What I am talking about relates exactly to why it is so important for me that trans women feel not only safe but AWESOME enough to speak publicly AS THEMSELVES about things they think and feel, without fear of admonishment from the peanut gallery. Because that is fucked up. And P.S. pretending to feel unsafe about exposure/outing and perpetuating a false victimhood, to protect yourself from ACTUALLY being victimized by your OWN community and letting it drive you back into anonymous toony-toon face blogging — that is what I am talking about also.nIf this applies to you, and stings a little, please try to at least acknowledge I am not talking out of my ass before you talk about this and that safety you wouldn’t have if you were public about your identity.
